To play, or just create?

So, while talking about blogs and games, I came to realize I’m missing a very important aspect of games here on my blog. Namely, playing them! I’ve written a bit about game jams and game courses, so the “making games”-part is pretty covered. But from now on, I’ll also be writing a bit about my own gaming experiences as a player. Because I do play games, both indie and AAA, when I have the time. True, there are a few i keep coming back to more often than others, but that just shows how much I like them. Also, I don’t really play games that I don’t think I’ll like (Unless someone I know really recommends it), nor do I often play the newest games on the shelves. This means that you should not come here expecting to see reviews of the newest Generic Shooter 6 or something like that. (I tend to not play shooters and horror games, so be warned!)

No, this is where I’ll share my gaming experiences, and talk about games I play, love, hate and respect.

So where do we start? How about starting with a self contradiction? I know I just said I don’t play a lot of “Just released” games, but here is the exception that confirms the rule. (Does that saying even work in English…?) So what have I’ve been doing these last few weeks? Well, I’ve been battling Pokémon next to my farm with pandas running around. Or, as it’s also known, playing Mists of Pandaria. (I’m going to assume you’ve heard of it).

My paladin is coming along just nicely. He’s already at 90, and soaring through the skies of Pandaria. Haven’t gotten around to creating my own little panda yet, but I’m sure I’ll get to it eventually. How do I like it? Well, it has ups and downs. For example, I love the way they do these new cut scenes for those of us that don’t feel like reading page up and page down to be able to follow the story. I also like the new way of doing the loremaster achievements, where you follow sub stories instead of just saying “Do X quests here”. On the other hand, the game has a whole new talent system. And here I was just getting used to the old one! Maybe that’s just me ranting, but oh, well. Bottom line: I like it.

You may have noticed that the way I talk about the game is different than how others do. I see now reason to stress out about pet battles being like Pokémon (Although I did mention it earlier, that was meant as a joke. haha….), farming like Farmville and pandarians like Kung fu Panda. Nor do I want to create a discussion about the fact that Pandarians are “neutral” until level 10, or how aesthetically pleasing they look wandering around Orgrimmar. Finally, I never really got too deep into the whole multiplayer aspect of the game (I know. Go ahead and laugh. But there is more to wow than just multiplayer content), so I don’t feel like I have the right to talk about the changes that were made in regards to PVP or dungeons/raids.

Well, it’s been fun, slightly random and very inconclusive. Let’s see what game I’ll write about next time I feel like writing. Any suggestions?
